POTTI SRIRAMULU: THE FIGHTER FOR ANDHRA
POTTI SRIRAMULU: THE FIGHTER FOR ANDHRA
Many freedom fighters fought for the freedom of India and lost
their lives. But one of them fought after the freedom of India, for the
statehood of Andhra Pradesh, popularly known as “Amarjeevi”.
Potti Sreeramulu or “Amarjeevi” was born on 16th March 1901 in
the Madras presidency of the British era. His parents were Guravayya and
Mahalakshamma. He completed his school in Chennai and later went to Mumbai for
his higher studies. He worked for the Great Indian Peninsular Railway.
In 1929 when he was 25, he lost his wife and newborn child, he
resigned from his job and went to Sabarmati Ashram.
CONTRIBUTION TO THE INDEPENDENCE
MOVEMENT
Sreeramulu also participated in the independence revolt of
India. He was also sent to jail for his participation in the “Namak Satyagraha”
(Dandi March). In the year 1946, he returned to Nellore, where he started
working for the betterment of Dalits and the promotion of the khadi and village
industries.
CONTRIBUTION TO THE FORMATION OF ANDHRA
PRADESH
In the 1920s Congress, the party that led the freedom fight for
India and made a promise to the people of India that, that once India gets its
freedom, every linguistic group will get its state. When 1947, India became an
independent country, their promises were forgotten then Malayalam speakers,
Kannada speakers, Marathi Speakers, and many other linguistic groups started
demanding their states. Among all, the strongest protesters were the Telugu
speakers.
At the time of general elections in 1952, when Jawaharlal Nehru
went for a campaign in Madras he faced black flags and the slogans demanding a
separate state of Andhra. Also, In October of the same year Potti Sriramulu
went on hunger strike for the formation of Andhra, as the strike continued it
got support from different towns and villages, many “Hartals” and “Bandhs” were
organized in the support of the hunger strike. On 15th December 1952 after 58
days of his strike, Potti Sriramulu died. After his death the protest for the state
of Andhra got severe and the government had no other way out but to constitute
the state.
Finally, on 1st October 1953, the state of Andhra was
constituted which is now known as Andhra Pradesh.
