THE NEW PARLIAMENT HOUSE OF INDIA: FROM DREAM TO REALITY

On 28th May 2023, the honorable Prime Minister of the country Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new parliament building of India which is exactly opposite to the current parliament building. In this blog, you will get to know all the information about the new parliament building.

Suggestions for a new parliament building to replace the older one rose in 2010 because of stability concerns. In 2012 a committee was set up to recommend alternatives to the present building by the former speaker Meira Kumar. The current building which is a 93 years old building is assumed to have unavailability of sufficient space for the house members and their staff. It is also adjudged to suffer from structural problems, so plans are in making to protect the building.

The total cost of the new parliament building costs of Rs. 862 crores which is built in a total area of 65000-meter sq. and are built by Tata Projects Limited. The groundbreaking process for making the new building started on 1st October 2020 and the stone-laying ceremony was held on 10th December 2020. The construction of the new parliament house was expected to be completed by August 2023 but it was done before time on 20th May 2023 and the building is now ready for its inauguration on 28th May 2023.

The expected life span of the building is 150 years and it is designed in such a way that it can resist earthquakes. Different architectural styles from different parts of the country are embodied in the building. There is no central hall in the building (earlier joint sessions of both the houses of the parliament took place in the central hall). Now the joint session can be held in the Lok Sabha.

The building has four floors which consist of ministers’ offices and committee rooms. The building has a total seating capacity of 1272 seats (888 seats in the Lok Sabha and 384 seats in the Rajya Sabha). This decision has been taken keeping in mind the growing population of the country and also considering the future delimitation.

A Sengol will also be placed near the speaker’s chair in the parliament. The Sengol is a symbol of the authority and commitment to justice of the Chola kings. The Sengol was used to symbolize the transfer of power from one ruler to another.
